Home infusion therapy is the practice of administering medications using the intravenous, subcutaneous, and epidural routes of administration in the comfort and convenience of the patient's home. Commonly prescribed therapies include:
- Antibiotic Therapy
- Pain Management
- Chemotherapy
- Total Parenteral Nutrition
- Growth Hormone Therapy
- Enteral Nutrition Therapy (administered via various gastric tubes)
Home infusion
therapy is initiated with a prescription from a physician for medications
and home health services. Patients are admitted to service from a hospital,
outpatient clinic, physician's office, and occasionally directly from
home. The home infusion provider, a licensed specialized pharmacy employing registered
pharmacists and nurses, coordinates the nursing visits and compounds the
medications to be delivered. Upon the patient's arrival back home, nurses
administer the medications and, where appropriate, train family members
or caregivers in the administration process and catheter care. The patient's
progress is closely monitored and the physician is kept abreast of the
situation. Patient account representatives work to ensure that all eligible
services are properly covered by the patients insurance provider.
